Preparing for Spring
For some people, Spring think of melting snow, warmer weather, and flowers. For others, it means “Spring cleaning”. If you are planning to sell your house, this may require de-cluttering.
Somehow over time, closets accumulate more clothes and shoes, garages collect more “stuff”, and kitchen cupboards become more crowded. While some scientific studies link clutter to possible mental health issues, I will address de-cluttering your home when you are preparing to sell it.
Potential buyers want to see how spacious and bright the house is and if/how their own furnishings will fit. Your goal should be to mimic a new home sales model in order to make your property more marketable. Additionally, a de-cluttered home is a safer place in which to live.
Some people hire professional organizers while others employ friends and family. What to do with the stuff you discard can become a challenge. Old, out-of-date or no longer fitting clothing can be donated to many different charities, such as:
- Disabled American Veterans – clothing, shoes, housewares, small appliances, sporting goods, bags/purses, and more
- Hope House – art supplies, games, kitchen items, household supplies, computers, bedding, linens, and more
- Prop Shop – pots and pans, books, seasonal items, jewelry, shoes, clothing, winter supplies, and more
- Houses of worship – check with local organizations
- Goodwill – clothing, accessories, household goods, electronics
- Vietnam Veterans of America – clothing, furniture, electronics, baby items, kitchenware
- Hope Chest – women’s clothing and accessories as well as upscale furnishings and home décor.
Excess furnishings can also be donated, junked, or given to charities or even college-bound family members. Broken electronic equipment may have to be recycled at an approved (county) site. Or you could always advertise on a website or have a yard sale and make some extra cash.
Whatever you choose, always be safe. Be cautious when dealing with strangers. If practical, meet in a public parking lot instead of your home and go only during daylight with a “helper”. Hire reputable professionals who specialize in this line of work. And you can always ask your friends and family or your Realtor for recommendations.
Now, stand back and enjoy your cleaner spaces and think about all the people who have or will benefit from your donations.
