Tips on the Moving Process
When you are getting ready to move to your new home, a little research and planning can go a long way. Here are some steps to take and points to consider as you prepare for a successful, hassle-free move.
Performing the move yourself
- Come up with a contingency plan. During the busy summer season, the truck rental companies may not have a truck available for you on the day of the move
- Use plenty of packing materials. Bubble wrap, peanuts and packing paper are good stables to have on hand. Remember, it costs less to use ample packing materials than it does to replace your valuable belongings
- Use some sort of floor and railing protection in your home, blankets are one option
Using a professional moving company
- Get a referral from a trusted source.
- Make sure you understand the complete agreement. Do not be afraid to ask questions or ask for clarifications.
- When contacting a moving company, make sure that certain points are discussed and or covered
- A thorough physical survey is performed at your current residence
- Questions are asked about your new home, type of home, truck access and other information which may affect the delivery into your new home
- Check with the Better Business Bureau
- Inquire if the movers are professional trained and have had a background check
- The surveyor explains in detail the terms of the agreement
- Make sure all rates and potential rates/charges are discussed
- Make sure valuation and valuation options are explained
- Make sure the claims process is explained
- Payment options
- What other services may be needed and what other potential service options are available
- If storage is needed, make sure the terms for their storage is discussed
- During the spring months, Minnesota has road weight restrictions Make sure the moving company takes this into consideration in planning your move
